Indoor Window Unit Air Conditioner Maintenance: Easy and Essential

Air conditioners are a great convenience. They help you stay cool when temperatures climb, but if you don’t take care to use and maintain them properly, an indoor air conditioning unit could actually contribute to pollution in your home.

The World Health Organization says that every year, over 1 million people die from chronic obstructive respiratory disease, or COPD, as a result of being exposed to indoor pollutants. Although most of those cases are not directly related to air conditioners, a dirty unit can cause a person with COPD to have a flare-up, particularly if they live in a household that habitually does not clean their unit.

Problems like respiratory infections and allergies more common in the overall population, and could turn into chronic issues. Keep reading to learn about some maintenance tips that you can start following today. They can keep your air conditioning unit functioning properly, and may even improve your family’s health

Look at Each of the Parts

If you examine your window air conditioner carefully, you might be surprised to see all the separate parts, and how they work together to keep you cool. An air-conditioner that is not functioning properly will be less efficient, and can even result in a more expensive utility bill.

There are two specific components that you should be sure to focus on during your maintenance efforts: The filter and the fins. Whereas the fins are sometimes visible from the air-conditioners exterior, the filter is not.

The fins are associated with airflow, and can usually be cleaned with a stiff brush. Since the filter resides inside, you’ll need to take it out and either replace it entirely, or clean it with a mild soap and warm water. Check the owner’s manual for your window unit to see if your model has a filter that should be replaced every year, or is made to last longer.

The Filter: More Important than You Might Think

An air conditioner filter helps manage dust inside your home. A filter that needs to be replaced will not be as effective. Any dust not captured by the filter will go back into your home, and can be very problematic for people who struggle with allergies.

Air Conditioning Units with Additional Features

If you’re especially concerned about maintaining clean air in your home, you can do more than just change the filter regularly. Look for a unit that includes a built-in air cleaner. Although this feature doesn’t mean that you can spend any less time on maintenance measures, it does give you a helping hand if you want cleaner air than a standard filter can provide.

Tackle the Coils

Finally, don’t forget to clean the air conditioner coils. Depending on the size of your unit, you may want to use something as large as a garden hose to wet them down, or perhaps just a small spray bottle. Understandably, some people are concerned about getting too much water near their air-conditioner. Although water does help to remove excess dust, you can accomplish the same result by using compressed air.

Taking care of your window unit air conditioner isn’t difficult, but it’s important to do on a regular basis. If you don’t, that decision can result in health problems, reduce the overall efficiency of the unit and cause your electricity bill costs to rise. Take an hour or two out of your schedule today and begin a habit that’s simple, but can bring several benefits.
